THE ART SCHOOL DAYS   JOE FINE TUNES HIS SKILLS

Picture
Kansas City Art Institute   1947-1951
When Joe returned home from the Navy he immediately enrolled at the Art Institute on the GI Bill ...and  voila.....an artist's career was launched!

The photo to your left is a Messer family favorite.  Joe sent this back home to Eunice to cheer her up but she could see that behind his always cheerful demeanor and crazy sense of humor, there was a not so subtle hint in that stick figure depicting a "starving artist".   Joe and his roomates really struggled that first year but they were determined to live their dream of making art their lifelong passion.

When Joe and Eunice were married in December of 1947 , they returned to Kansas City to set up housekeeping.   To help make ends meet, Eunice took a job at the Hallmark cards factory while Joe studied and created long hours each day.
